The shape of the card allows it to be moved from side to side whilst the card is inserted, meaning a cleaning action against the chip reader is achieved.
Despite initial belief that chip & pin readers would be less susceptible to contamination issues, the opposite has proven to be the case, and even more regular cleaning is required to keep the equipment working.
